running the faucets does help if temperatures fall below freezing. i used to work for a plumbing company (not as a plumber tho) down here in florida. every time it got below freezing, there were 4 or 5 busted pipe emergencies the next morning. so the plumbers were always warning people to let the faucets trickle overnight when it gets cold. and if you know where the water main enters your house, try to run a faucet on the opposite side of the house b/c it relieves pressure in the pipes throughout the house.

I don't pay attention well enough to audiobooks. I'll notice I've zoned out listening and missed the past 2+ chapters.

For us - we went to Florida for two weeks and the Hot Water heater broke (apparently) the first day we left. We got back to a house and from first floor to attic it was encased in frozen ice windows and humidity.

Our basement was flooded, all the first floors warped, and mold had grown everywhere...

We had to move into a hotel for a month while mold remediation happened.....

The first thing we got with the new system is a water detector and put it under the hot water tank and everywhere else in our house.

I've starting listening to them while doing menial tasks and I tend to stay focused, but it takes me longer to do housework.

At that point, just buy a tankless water heater.

I wanted to do that - and we've lived in a house with a Rennai before - but we have a big 1800's spread out house with wack old plumbing that turned out wasn't even possible let alone cost effective to re-plumb. So we bought a cheap new water heater and I insisted on getting the model with the pan that has a send-to-your-phone warning as well as a sensor on the actual unit to let us know if it craps out. :)

Ack! This has happened to me! It's so gross!

That's part of how our hardwood floors buckled too. :(

I'm assuming you are on city septic? Either way - my uncle - who was a plumber, always kept a bottle of dawn dish washing liquid on the back of our north woods toilet and when we had back-up this past summer in Wisconsin (in a rented house) he solved it with putting some dawn down the toilet after SO much plunging, etc. It was seriously miraculous. My sister-in-law and I had used literally every available paper towel and bleach wipe.

When we travel in the winter for short periods of times (three weeks or less) we usually leave a faucet open and dripping and make sure the house thermostat is set to at least the 50's - it's a sprawled out place so things can freeze easily in any one part of the house. We typically leave one faucet upstairs open and one downstairs.

    Solid advice.
Also I've learned the value of having a shop vac over the years. And a lot of fans.
