12/13 - Make Haste Monday

If you’re just starting off on MTurk don’t eat a bunch of rejections right off the bat. The most important thing is qualifications and the most important qualification is your acceptance/rejection rate. If that dips too low you may as well forget the whole thing. You’d be excluded form good work and it may not even be fixable, realistically speaking. There are bad HITs and there are bad requesters. You’re going to have to do plenty of bad HITs, you shouldn’t work for any bad requesters. I wouldn’t work for anybody that doesn’t have a 99% rate of acceptance. I don’t know what your expectations are but a lot of people would agree that you shouldn’t even be seeing the first month as a money making opportunity but rather just trying to get your numbers up. There are requesters that don’t reject, but don’t pay very well and who put out a good number of HITs, those are your target. Just my two cents.

Oh I agree with all you've said, the problem is if I waited for only 99% percent reviewed i'd be doing like 2 one cent hits per day, it wouldn't be worth it at all, so I figure i have to take some small risks.

I think MLDataLabeler might be a requester you could keep an eye out for. Sometimes it seems like those accounts are made just to help boost people's HIT count when they start MTurk. Yeah, some of the stuff they ask you to do is ludicrous, like putting a box around every person in a stadium, but a lot of it is doable.

I've looked at every HIT available to me, everyday, it's not a lot so it's not hard to literally look through all of them, I'm thinking things must be bad now, or different than when other people started, because even the youtube tutorials from the beginning of this year show waay more options for newbies.

Maybe, it's hard for me to gauge what you're seeing or what's open to you. But that seems weird that you'd actually be running out of HITs to do, no matter how bad. If you mean that you're manually going through the actual MTurk front page you may benefit from using your HIT finder more. I'm not sure how you're using this script/addon but if you're using MTurk Suite things change when you start building up your favorites list. Of course you also need to take the 'adult qualification' and some of the other basic quals given by MTurk to access a lot of HITs too. It takes a bit of time to get things rolling.

 

I just took a look at the Mturk front page and provided that your approval percentage is above 90% there are some hits that you should qualify for. They're not in any way good hits, mostly low paying receipt hits, but there are some there. Are you seeing those of hits?

Yeah, i'm using the hit finder, and applying for every qualification many times, there just isn't any work for me yet. If i'm very lucky I can get to maybe 50 hits a day, but usually most of those are .01 cents and even so I could not find that many everyday.

 

Nothing, aside from those in red (bad requestors) horribly long work for .05 cents, etc.

 

Unfortunately, I think that might just be all that is available to you until you get you approval rating up. It's a tough position to be in, but you probably can dig yourself out if you start grinding out those red hits and make sure you're only working for safe requesters. Now is not the time to take risks. It really can get even worse.

 

Yeah, that's what i'm working on now, I have to take careful risks to take some HITs from those bad requestors with bad approval ratings, because there isn't much of any other options, unless i carefully watch throughout the day for good hits available for noobs.
