I tried the thing where you put two folders over the laptop as a shade. it didn't work to make the screen visible enough to turk, and I had to sit in a weird position. I would love to give that backpack thing a try.

Yeah I'd probably go DIY too.

As one 2021 review said after trying a few pricey options:
"... I’m not saying these products all suck, but it definitely feels like this is one area that’s filled with a lot of overpriced duds. So proceed with caution. If it’s over $40 and it’s not a whole-ass tent, it probably isn’t worth it."

I think a person's head would also have to be in the same level of light as the computer screen. maybe I'm wrong, but maybe that's why the ways I've tried haven't worked.

an umbrella covered with a light-color cotton sheet with a flashlight under the umbrella and sheet...maybe that could actually work. but it would look really weird. but I wouldn't care if it was an unusually lucrative time to be turking. if it was a cotton sheet you could see through it but stark light couldn't get in.

I mean both the person and the laptop would be under the umbrella and sheet. so the person's face wouldn't be bombarded with sunlight, making the screen dark and with shadows (glare).

Likewise, when I've thought about this before, I imagined full enclosures that extend to surround my head, creating a "dark workspace."

The problem with opaque "full enclosures" is that I'd rather avoid inhibiting my peripheral vision and situational awareness when I'm in public. Any full enclosure will obviously block my vision of everything around me. (It could be OK at home, in the yard, but I don't often need it there; when at home I'd usually rather work inside.)

I'm back to the cardboard box idea then. or maybe 2 umbrellas, 1 for behind the laptop, 1 that is upright over the laptop and the person's head.
