This slaps so hard.

 

can't bring myself to do the NT HITs anymore. why did they ruin the formatting? obviously the videos should be aligned horizontally, like they always were.

I'll never understand the purpose of changing or swapping or reversing the "order" of the options in a series of pages of bubble questions. Keeping the order consistent prevents confusion (e.g. "strongly disagree" on the left and "strongly agree" on the right, OR vice-versa, either way, just keep it consistent from page to page).

If pages 1, 2, 3 keep the order consistent but then page 4 reverses or swaps or changes the order and page 5 changes it back to normal but page 6 changes it again ... then I start wondering if I should "go back" to make sure I didn't mistake the orderings on prior pages – but of course, as usual, there's NO back button. ... So I return the study and send a feedback note.

I don't understand the purpose of changing the orderings. If it's meant to serve an "attention check" purpose, that doesn't work: Suppose you mistook the ordering on one page, because you didn't notice the changed order in the heading on that page, so your responses are incorrect on that page, and its context isn't too dependent on the others. Your unintentionally wrong choices may look reasonable to the researchers; they might NOT detect your failure to notice the changed ordering. So the researcher gets erroneous data for that page and possibly doesn't notice that it is amiss.

The changed orderings serve no useful purpose and can lead to bad data going undetected.

 

Even stupider is if the changed orderings (in some pages' headings) might actually be typos, errors in the study itself, whereas the intended order is supposed to be consistent but the researchers accidentally used the wrong order in the headings on some pages. That can happen:

Case in point, one study I returned today had A/B choices with paired buttons, left & right, one pair per page, and the first several had a consistent order, but then unexpectedly the order was swapped on page 6. I almost didn't notice that, because after 5 consistent pages I wasn't expecting the order to suddenly swap on page 6. — It's unclear whether the researchers really intended to swap the order on page 6, or if that swapping on that one page may have been a clumsy error.

Hmm ... They said in January:

"Our minimum payment amount has increased from a rate of $6/hour (10 cents per minute) to a rate of $7.50/hour (12.5 cents per minute)."

"In addition, the recommended payment amount has increased from $7.50/hour to $10/hour (16.67 cents per minute)."

So I guess the proposed 8-minute $0.25 surveys would be exempt from that.
