Let me break it down for you per my SC traditional understanding:

Sweetie = you're the spawn of Satan, 9/10 times demeaning.
Honey = you're an idiot, but a lovable one
Sweetheart = similar to honey, but far less lovable.
Darlin' = almost always very endearing addition to a sentence. Actually kinda difficult to use in a negative connotation unless you're uncultured & don't know the rest of the above code words.

Tell him to try the phrase "listen here, darlin'"

I heard that phrase uttered once. The fury of a thousand suns was unleashed shortly after & I had to ask if that word was un-kosher because its by far my favorite. Girl waitresses/bartenders/anyone in service industry = Darlin', boys = Beau.

 

One of my favorite things in life is when an older southern woman calls me honey. It just makes my heart warm somehow.

 

A girl has no name.

 

It's a southern thing for sure and usually a veiled insult. I try to use it sparingly. I don't mind it usually except when they really pour it on. I almost jumped through the drive thru window and slapped some woman that called my husband darling and sugar after every sentence.

 

I've never actually heard it used as an insult, I think people read too much into things these days.

The first time I moved out of state it was to Ohio, and they absolutely hated me saying things like that. Men, women, didn't matter. You could see them physically cringe. I hated it there though, so I just used it even more. I think part of their issue was that we were sooooo close to living in Appalachia, they felt they needed to disconnect themselves from those mountain hillbillies, and that's a similarity.
