This has probably shortened the life of many a parent.

When kiddo was littler and used to wake up in the middle of the night and need me, because we have hardwood floors I could usually hear his wee feet running as fast as he they down the dark hallway to my bedroom. However, there were a few times I woke up to his face next to mine and nearly pissed myself in fearful surprise.

Now, he's a lumbering 6' dude who still comes down that same hallway to give me hugs goodnight when he's going to bed but he can, oddly, walk much more quietly now. So I am often started awake by him giving me a goodnight hug. I asked him once if I scream when he does that because it feels in my head like I am and he said no, I just grumble or mumble sleepy things.

I am screaming in my head, though.
