So I spent like 20 minutes entering data into a HIT, but the automatic MTurk logout timeout happened just before I submitted — so when I submitted, it wasn't logged in anymore, and all the data was lost. (I wish MTurk could somehow preserve the entered data when this happens.) ... From now on, I'll try to remember to switch to a different tab and make sure I'm logged in before I submit a HIT.

after logging back in, click the browser back button a bunch of times on the hit next time.

Thanks, I just did that now, and saw an error saying the hit submission failed — but then I checked my dashboard again, and yes apparently the re-attempted submission did succeed. (I hope it worked correctly, i.e. I hope my data got through.) ...Thanks!

lol, does the forum really need to link the word "dashboard" to the forum wiki page about dashboards?

Oh hell, I think something bad happened.

Stupidly, I returned to the HIT page in a separate tab, where I saw that all the data was lost — so I started entering a few words of new data — and THEN I saw your reply, and went back to the original tab, clicked Back — and then the submission happened, but it probably submitted the incomplete new data and not the original complete data. So, it's a bad submission. I'll email the requester and explain, and beg them not to reject. ... Lesson learned.

Thanks, yeah I don't always have that stuff running — (slow computer, sometimes I don't keep everything running).

Yeah I think hitting Back definitely caused my NEW entries (which were only like 5% complete, lol) to be submitted, instead of the original data which was completely lost.

I've emailed the requester, but I'm sure they'll need to reject and that's entirely understandable.

If you hit "back" in the original tab, it's the original tab's data that would've sent.

    I hope you're right. — I'm not 100% sure though.

    Sequence of events:

    (Browser: Chrome)
    • I finished my entries
    • I tried to submit
    • Oops, login prompt
    • I logged back in
    • Page-not-found error
    • I opened a separate tab (TAB #2)
    • I opened the active HIT from my queue
    • Data was all gone
    • I started re-entering data (like 5% of it) from memory
    • I saw the forum reply suggesting the back-button
    • I went back to the 1st tab
    • Clicked Back a couple times
    • (Note: I did NOT see a browser prompt about "form resubmission")
    • The HIT got submitted
    • I went to the other tab again (TAB #2, where I had started re-entering data)
    • I reloaded that tab
    • The HIT was NOT active anymore (because the submission had happened)
    • I think the submission may have used my partial re-entered data, not the original data
Or maybe you're right and it took the original data. But in such cases, browsers will usually issue a message about confirming a "form resubmission". IINM, that browser message WILL guarantee that the submission is using the earlier data from that page and that tab. But in this case, I did NOT see any such message. Therefore I'm unsure whether the submission used the original data or not.

No problem, I've reconstructed all my data and emailed it to the requester.

One rejection wouldn't kill me. I'm 99.97%. One reject at this time would knock me back to 99.96.

    I will survive.
