For a soft block you do still see the HITs but you are just unable to accept them, for example if you have a watcher for them it would appear purple on panda crazy

I stopped getting Ben PEterson hits. I am guessing I just did way too many similar. How can I know if I was blocked by him?

 

Oh then you were definitely soft blocked, he does that but it is only temporarily, nothing to be concerned about! After a while you will be able to do those HITs again. The only way to know for sure is if you set up a panda for his HITs and then you will see it turning purple

The same thing happened to me a few months after I started doing the Ben hits. I emailed them and they got back to me in a couple of days saying that I needed to use the full range of choices (not putting everyone as a 2, lol). They unblocked me and I haven't been blocked since. You can try emailing them and it might be quicker.

 

That's literally the definition of a "hard" block lol

Sorry if I misspelled it, the way somebody had explained it to me is that a soft block works like a temporary qual that will prevent you from taking more HITs from a certain requester until they revert it, while a hard block is more of a "trigger" and once you get 3 of those you are booted from Mturk. Is this wrong?

 

I don't have a qual which prevents me taking HITs, his HITS are not among my "unqualified" list as well.

 

I mean, you're not far off. There's no such thing as "soft" blocks and "hard" blocks to Amazon though, so if someone says they were soft blocked on something, it means that they got an exclude qual or they capped.

There's only one type of block that concerns the powers-that-be, and that's what most people will refer to as a "hard block". I guess it does work like a qualification, in that you cannot accept a requester's hit (and you'll be told in the banner that the HIT requires qualifications that you do not have). This results in purple pandas because JR's script can't tell the difference -- the client side information on the worker.mturk site is the same as failing to meet a normal qualification.

While blocks (read: "hard" blocks) are most likely a factor that goes into determining account suspension, there's no real data on this. Many people that have been on the platform for a while (especially in the early days) could have dozens, and we're still chugging along. The "three strikes" theory is pure conjecture, and most definitely wrong.

 

Ahh I see, thanks for clarifying! That's reassuring though, I've always been afraid of getting three of those so called hard blocks and getting booted lol
