    Yep surprising I know! This house in ancient and the furnace system is hooked to a blower. It looks like the bearings on mine needs to be oiled...but luckily for me, this means taking the entire fan housing out so I can oil it...since it doesn't have a handy dandy oil port like most modern things would.

    I put in a call to a friend nearby that does work on these sorta things and he's supposed to let me know on a scale of 1 to gon die how hard this will be.

    Everyone who is cold I recommend start a comfy house fire. Do your best to maintain only a portion of the house on fire at a time to avoid death but gain maximum heat.

    I fear the landlord would be unhappy by this as the house I rent is old and shitty and would probably burn too fast for me to warm up before it was done.

    We had been traveling one time and got back to our house late on Sunday night to find we'd run out of gas and the furnace had turned off. We were able to get someone to come out and do an emergency fill, but after 24 hours or so the hot water still wasn't (hot, that is).

    I grew up with all electric everything, and had no idea about these kinds of things. After doing some research I ended up sticking a lighter in the bottom of the hot water heater and switching it on and waving it around a bit until I figured I'd tempted fate more than was reasonable and if I still wasn't dead it was a good time to stop. But it worked!

    I also had the same general paranoia of gas=potential explosion, but I told myself that if they put a hole in there big enough to stick in a lighter then they had to make it reasonably safe to mess around with naked flames, or it'd be a really bad publicity day for the manufacturer.
