I really think it's situational, like @ChrisTurk was saying. A guy at the airport I don't know calling me baby and then explaining what a plane is like I'm an idiot or a guy coming up to me in a bar, when I have an obvious rock on my hand and am with a dude, and calls me honey and hits on me...those are not fun experiences. I worked at a damn airport, and still had dudes explaining what the things with wings were to me when I had a damn nametag on and was giving tours of the hangar. Matt was flabberghasted, it was crazy to him how rando dudes would assume I literally must be too stupid to understand cause boobies. And if I say, please don't call me honey cause it makes me uncomfortable, I think that's a very polite way to ask for something and getting called a Grinch in response is not kosher. That's a pretty clear line between dude trying to be nice and dude trying to be a prick.

When @gurlondrums calls me bb cause I slammed my hand into the doorframe this morning, it's cutesy and fun. Matt's older coworker who I'm on good terms with calls me buttercup and it makes me giggle cause I know he would 100% not do that if I asked.

No way. Those words in the South are as old as time & they most certainly have negative/positive connotations to them. I can clear as day remember teachers/parents even teaching kids how/when/where/why to use each at given times. Its most definitely a part of language - at least around here - as much as any dictionary explanation of the words.

If an entire cultural area of the country generally understands the meaning of their usage, it has meaning.
