We have midcontinent which is a subsidiary of Comcast and Vast which I don't even know, They get resold and rebranded every few years they've done it four times since I started taking notice. With the way the FCC is headed I expect my internet to get worse not better.

Need to vent this.

Today is my first day to my day job after vacation. My last day was Wednesday, 7/12. On Thursday, 7/13 - the first day of my vacation - I get an email asking me to do some analysis. I have my out of office reply up & I had emailed several people (including the person that this email is from) a few days prior alerting them to the fact that I would be out for 10 days. Everyone was cool. I reply to this email saying basically exactly what my out of office said - that I would be out until 7/24 & giving the list of contact people to get in touch with to do this analysis while I am gone. The emailer replies that it's no big deal & it can wait until I get back. This is not unusual, there's a culture around here of only trusting work/liking to work with certain people & requestors will often wait on their "person." Also on 7/13 I get an email from my "manager" alerting me to this analysis request - which I had already sorted out - & also scolding me for not arranging coverage while I am out on vacation & not alerting him (my manager) to me being out on vacation. Couple of things, I did alert people - I just didn't alert him (my manager) & two - he, as my manager, is supposed to manage me & my workflow right? Well, how is it that I am basically the only person in our group that knows how to do this analysis? I have trained several other people in our group how to do it but whenever the work comes around & I am unavailable or not able to perform the analysis in the time period requested, these other people who know how to do the analysis are also magically too busy or forgot how to do it or whatever. Isn't it your job as a manager to not have a single point failure here? IMO, it's such a bad idea to have one person in a huge group of people who is the only person who knows how to do something. I also hate being that person.

All that said, today I get back, expecting to start the analysis bright & early & have it done by COB today. Lo & behold, the samples that I need analyze are nowhere to be found! Like, actually probably not even in the state. Ummmmmmm, what happened to this super urgent request??

Ugh. Work.
