yeah i didnt mean to scare you with that, sorry. i just hit a few people i had on FB up with that cause i was stuck there waiting on admission all that time and then of course my phone died cause being there was draining it from horrible service

 

I had to have my thyroid out (almost 20 years ago now) and just monitor my TSH levels with blood work about every six weeks. Mine was Hashimoto's but I have been on Synthroid for a zillion years.

It sounded like you went to the hospital for asthma - how are they getting to thyroid for you?

well in round bout way it was my thyroid that blocked my airway when i had an asthma attack, or it cause said attack from blocking airway. either way, its thyroid issue, and it runs in my family anyways. my mom had hers out fairly early in life, like...30s maybe. i was still young. i know with mine with the cat scan and xray they said its hyperactive and inflammed/enlarged, so i have to go in with ENT, Oncology and Endocrine to get a plan of removal. they kinda said with it how it is, im prolly going to have to have it done standing up to put me under, cut open the area, then trach-vent me while the surgery is on and rotate me to being on my back. thats my only real concern here is all that movement. so yeah, my life is turning into big fun lol

Spoiler: TMI about Thyroids for Azazael

Oh jeez, I feel ya. I had an inhaler for years, but really it was just my thyroid enlarging. In my 20's we were able to control it by doing my TSH and T3 blood tests every six weeks for the most part.
Hit me up by DM if you want to talk specifics.

My brother had half his thyroid removed in his 20's (which is rare for men) and my sister, aunt and mom all have thyroid issues, biopsies,etc. Also I have another Aunt and a cousin who are opposite and have Graves so we are family of varying thyroid surgeries, endocrinologists and surgeons.

Mine had to be removed and go to surgery eventually because of an initial Herthle Cell abnormality in a biopsy (again rare) which turned out to be benign but I interviewed multiple surgeons (because of the different surgical approaches (standing vs. not standing) - (also I have Van Willibrands so was in danger of bleeding too much....) - before I felt comfortable with my surgical plan.

If you are okay with sharing are you on Synthroid right now? What level? If so is it the name brand and non-generic? I've found that my levels are really off all the time (I have tested every 6 weeks for almost 20 years).

If I have the generic brand vs. name brand I pay extra to get the name brand. If you are taking meds the question is what is your TSH and T3? Is there a possibility of shrinking the hyperactivity by adjusting your levels?

When I was talking to surgeons they also told me one option was that I would be standing with a trach, but after interviewing a number of surgeons - I ended up travelling to Portland and putting together a team that was ready with vitamin K shots for blood clotting (which they did) and never had to do a trach even with my thyroid and a number of lymph glands being removed. I was a awake and functional within hours of the surgery.

That was many, many years ago. Based on my families experiences I insisted on a number of things and that worked out well.

Let me know if I can help. I know how scary it is. If you are concerned about the trach and movement during surgery talk it through with your surgeon. It might be that they can do this without all of that.

tbh im not too worried about being trach'd, ive been trach'd a few times in my life already so its fine. i just want it done with tbh. and no synthroid yet and i dont have my lab counts but the doctors all told me my levels were super weird and they would feel better removing it and throwing it under a biopsy than leaving it in

For sure. I had the same reaction. I wasn't so much worried about the trach as the bleeding, however - I am super curious what your actual TSH and T3 levels are? My experience with "super weird" is that those numbers can change significantly with the right dosage of Synthroid. Typically you should be able to log in to your blood-work or medical account and see the data?

In general a quick needle biopsy is a lot easier than a surgery. But definitely do what you feel comfortable with. That's what is most important.
