Because it's stupidly dangerous. I'm a welder by trade, and screw that noise. Maybe do it for a year, tops, to put back in savings then stay on dry land.

 

I recall an article that indicated underwater welding had something like 100 times more fatalities than logging, the next most dangerous job (other than astronaut), so like ~13-15% lifetime fatalities, and most deaths occurred in welders with 10-15 years of full time experience, so just as soon as you start actually making some real money with your experience you land a job that gets you killed.
