They've still always been pretty big (or well, acceptable at least) on the clubbing/festival/party scene. Not too uncommon to see a half naked girl in heels with a fanny pack, so she can dance and frolic and not worry about her stuff getting lost or whatever.

I still wear my "stash band" under my top on walks because I will die before I wear a fanny pack, even if it's not that weird for hiking lol. I HAVE A NO FANNY PACK RULE DAMMIT!
