I've been working on mturk for 5 or 6 years. In the beginning, I didn't do a lot of research on it and my lack of effort was reflected in a horrible hourly wage. Once I started joining forums, learning the ropes, and reading everything I could about how things worked, my hourly wages started to improve. I don't think it's reasonable for MOST people to look to mturk to replace their regular job. Unfortunately, most people aren't motivated enough to put in the time and research it takes to become good enough at working on mturk to actually make a decent wage. Being self-motivated is hard, but it is a requirement to do well at mturk. It takes a lot of effort to sit my ass down at the computer every single day and work.

It would seem as though these article are written by people who don't know anything about mturk or how it works and likely aren't willing to put in the time and effort that it would likely take to give a more balanced view.
