Concentrate on moving out the hood before you start buying expensive stuff.

 

I even out the thick bits as well, but I wouldn't say that they need to be flattened or pounded. Just put them between sheets of plastic and flatten them out with the heels of your palms or the curvy part of a heavy skillet or something. No need to buy a whole special tool for it.

 

That's actually better advice. Wait for the roomba somewhere safer.
