Hello, I'm new here and I've been on MTurk for around six days so far and have made around $40. Outside of one $16 day, most of it has been lackluster, but I've just recently (today) figured out how to use a ton of scripts finally and hopefully, can start pulling in at least $25 per day.
Just a quick question though, for clarity sake, doing the cheapest hits and a lot of them is the best thing to do for your first couple of days, correct? or should I be looking for things that pay the highest?

Melting Glacier PE: $30.01 - That's over $1.25/hour! ┬┴┤( ͡° ͜ʖ├┬┴
As for your probationary period question, I'd say it would be a good mix of both. You want to raise your amount of HITs accepted as much as possible while keeping in mind that you can only accept 100 HITs per day. A handful of surveys (15, 20) and some small batches (AudioKite is a good start!) will probably be the best way to maximize your earnings while in probation.-

Hello welcome to the hub.
I agree with MG that a mixture of both is possibly the best way to go. Once you're out of probation you could do some low paying batches while working on better paying surveys and batches to pad your numbers just in case you get a rejection.-

Welcome to TurkerHub, @Abscheulich!
During your probationary period you should focus on going for hits from varying requesters in order to get a feel for the platform. As MG has suggested a healthy mix from good rated requesters is going to set you up for a better experience in the long run. I would also say try to max your HITs each day for you probationary period as it will help you should you get a rejection later on. I was doing transcriptions for my first few days, but they took me around 3 minutes on average for 9 cents. I figure there's better out there, but I've also seen others say that surveys aren't that great, so what exactly are the money makers? I feel like I'm missing something and I'm not sure what.

Most of the good paying hits are after you reach certain milestones such as 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 hits. Most surveys aren’t great cause they take a decent amount of time to do and the pay isn’t great or barely passes minimum wage and sometimes require a bunch of writing which is a pain. But there are also times where they’re are great surveys that are quick or offer a great bonus. As @hvnnvr said, come to the daily thread each day and you will start to see what the good paying hits are or even good surveys that might be out there,
