Well, growing up and all through college we weren't allowed to use "they" as a singular gender neutral like Dickinson did. And I didn't have the benefit of the Internet to quickly look up stuff to defend myself like that, lol.

I would have had to write, "Ask each student what he or she wants for lunch."
