    If it's a dedicated breaker for the water heater then my bet would be on bad circuit breaker. Unless the heating element or thermostat shorted in the water heater which could happen. That or a mouse got thoroughly cooked somewhere.

    The water heater itself is <2yrs old so hopefully doubtful on that.. if its a bad breaker will replacing it fix the problem? Or at least replacing it == lets it trip again if its something more booboo'ey?

    If you want to do some further troubleshooting ....

    If you haven't already, flip this this off then see if you can turn the breaker in question off then back on. If not probably a bad breaker. If so turn the big breaker back on and see if the breaker in question pops back off immediately. If that happens then the problem is probably with the appliance, but could still be a bad breaker.

    You'll be killing electricity to the house when you do that so shut your computers/servers down first and have a flashlight handy.

    If it's a bad breaker replacing it will fix the problem.If you replace it and it trips again right away you'll know for sure its the appliance.

    Also serious sentence: thank you for the help I just can't nuke the power until later tonight (all da pcs doing da works) haha so will bookmark this & nag you at 2AM where I demand you be available for both live troubleshooting and over the internet CPR.

    And yes, I started that sentence with "serious sentence" & I meant it :p
