My delightful first french teacher made us learn "duh" phrases (and would not ever let us use the english) that she told us would come in handy were we ever in France and suddenly forgot how to use our words. I laughed this off in the 7th grade. Who cares if I can ask where the bathroom is? I did not laugh when I was 22 and literally asking and had basically forgotten 90% of the french I knew under pressure

By golly, did I get lost and frazzled so many times! But, I always knew how to find a bathroom, a train station, and order fries- the handiest of skills when abroad

 

You only need to learn how to ask for a beer (or wine if in France) and you're set!

Literally 90% of the reason I took French in college was so I would be able to order French food without completely butchering the pronunciation (and the other 10% was so I could pronounce clothing and makeup brands haha)

 

I thought that this was America!

Ha! The first phrase I taught myself before heading to Italy last year was due espresso, per favore and it came in handy 3-4 times a day.

 

Trying to order a pizza en francais in Riviere-du-Loup in my chopped up, Ontario, grade 9 french accent didn't go so well. I know I had the translation right, but they thought it would be funny to charge me about 3 times what it should have cost. After 13 hours of driving, I wasn't going to argue.

I don't think they liked my Leafs hat.
