The very first animated gif I ever created way back in the beginning of images on the internet was of a stick figure dancing to this song. I had to prove to my boss what animated gifs could do cuz they were new and Adobe let us created them super easily!!!

It was genius moves like that which kept me a highly paid web programmer for years.

Defaulting on student loans is probably the #1 reason I turn people down who want to rent from us. That tanks their credit score drastically.

    Good credit is very important.

Also don't you live in some crappy place so bad the walls gave you scabies? Having good credit so you can leave that shitpile is a good reason to not default.

To be perfectly honest I bounce between having mine in forbearance (don't have to pay but interest still accrues) and making small-ish monthly payments. I'm almost 6 years out of grad school and I've paid down about 25% of principal. I absolutely don't recommend doing what I do though, and I'm dumb for doing it -- if you can afford it, that should be the first thing you pay because the interest rates are so high.

If you invest the money and the percentage gained off the investment is more than than the interest rate of the loan, then it's a net positive on the income over what you would save paying off the loan. You just don't have the the money to spend on other stuff that actually be fun.

Been paying on mine since finising grad school in 2000. A couple of periods of forbearance but otherwise monthly. Still owe a bundle. Biggest reason why is about, um, 8-10 years ago? There was a refinance option that lowered my interest rate drastically (3.25%). I didn't realize at the time it reset it to 15 years. Took me a good five years to figure that out, and by then Kiddo was in braces so...not paying extra on it.

    However, I did the maths.

It will be paid off the year my kid graduates college. I'll be well and truly done with college debt totally in the exact same year.

Also, 3.25% is the lowest interest rate I have, so any extra goes on mortgages!

Some of these student loan stories are insane. Why don't you guys just have rich grandparents that start a $25K college fund when you're born?

You can't default on student loans.

I already paid all of mine off ages ago though.
