The distal cause of mturk success is total time invested. Being available to work as many hours as possible increases the chance of collecting qualifications, which result in the ability to perform work with generally better compensation, and with significantly less competition for each unit of work. In the event that no well compensated work is available, time invested in working still has advantages, chiefly increasing total approved HITs, but also additional income.

Grinding out 300 safe but garbage penny hits per hour is unpleasant, but after 34 hours the worker has surpassed the 10k threshold, and has $102 that would otherwise have been collected by a competing worker. It's better to earn three dollars per hour than no dollars per hour.
