    "Memento Mori", both the literal saying and the concept, were definitely a thing, and were super common in the 1500s-1600s. My personal favourite in painting form is found in Holbein's Ambassadors, because it's so subtle and is a fantastic use of anamorphosis:

    If you move your head so that your screen is in either upper right side of your vision or the lower left corner, you can see that the strange mark on the floor is actually a skull.

    The painting was hung slightly above eye level on a staircase originally, so you would see the skull as you came up and as you came down.

    The painting currently resides in the National Gallery in London and is even cooler in person :D

    I'm sitting here staring at this UCL MetaLab hit. It will finish out my normal goal for the day but I know it's going to be so bad. 60 mins of inquisit. My eyes will hurt, my fingers will hurt, my brain will hurt, but I'll be done for the day at that point lol. blargh.
