I'm actually going to be completely serious here, but will try to make up for it later.
I've had a reasonable number of situations where I'm not sure exactly what's happened,
but I'll know I've been working on a HIT for say, 20 or thirty minutes, and right before I'm
going to submit it, I'll take a look at the original Mturk page and it says that I'm 15 seconds
in on a HIT that has/had an hour long timer. It's like the clock reset itself. When possible,
I try to let the clock run down before submitting in these situations, although there have
also been times when I just didn't give a flying fudge. I've never had any practical problems
with this, but wonder if it could be a 'time spent on survey' problem at times.

I think you are talking about the time that TurkerView script records, it resets the timer if you close the survey page and open it again. If you spend 20 minutes on a survey (given that you accepted it), MTurk platform itself should properly record it as 20 minutes. Qualtrics (the platform that hosts most academic surveys) also records your time and usually it's somewhat accurate.

In my case, the requester was just an asshat and rejected everyone who could read faster than he expected.

 

This is the sort of HIT I wouldn't mind getting all day long. An efficient fifty cent HIT could theoretically be a sort
of 'batch' HIT concept for me. I just can't get the hang of the 'performance level' one needs to do the lower-paying
HITs as well as a lot of people around here. This could be a combination of being older and missing a couple
fingers from an unfortunate argument I had with a snow blower last season. (The snow blower won.)
