Ugh, I never had an error screen, but mine sounded demonic trying to boot up and then clunked and refused to do anything. Luckily it was "only" (relative to buying a new xbox) like $25 to try a new power brick and that ended up being the cause... but it doesn't sound like the same thing you're getting.
