I don't like new stuff. Too much that can go wrong that's too expensive. I miss my old Camaro. 305 with a carb, fuel pump on the engine block, TH350 tranny. Had a wire going to the fuse block, a wire going to the starter/ignition relay/solenoid then the distributor. Smartest thing on that car was the $5 pawn shop radio, and when the ignition module went out in the McDonald's drive-thru from the mid-summer heat, I pushed it out of line, grabbed a bus to AutoZone, bought the module for $15, and changed it with a Phillips and flathead screwdriver.

Optionally, if you give consent, you will also video record yourself listening to music.

    Not for $2.

My stepdad and uncles lament on this topic all the time. The glory days of their easy-to-fix American made steel(?) cars that had a new problem every week :emoji_joy:. Parts were cheaper yeah but SOMETHING WAS ALWAYS WRONG WITH THEM. I'll keep my plastic Toyota with it's overpriced nav unit and computer module.

I had an 05 Cobalt. Great little fun car until the clutch went out. $1200. I could've had the tranny rebuilt while it was already dropped for another $300 because I knew the guy and he'd only charge the cost of the rebuild kit while someone else did the clutch.

The ignition module went out, and that was $250. Then the wheel hub went out. That was another $250. And those two I fixed myself. I don't even wanna know how much a shop would charge.

New cars are okay, until they start breaking down system by system. Then it's a cascade of $150+ parts, and labor. If you do it yourself it takes a $100 tool you'll use exactly once, and you'll have to sacrifice a small animal or child and pray to the Elder Gods while naked and hope to hell you installed the new part right or you've accidentally scuffed a gold/palladium contact microscopically and the thing catches fire when you turn the key on and it gets .5VDC at 800A.

You say that sarcastically, but around here I've seen classy 1980's BMW's that are friggin pristine except they need a new engine or tranny go for a couple thousand, $4k at most. Expensive cars are expensive AF to maintain. Buddy of mine once had an 02 Porsche Boxster. To keep it under MFG warranty, the oil changes had to be done by a certain shop.

    Screw $120 oil changes.

That's why you only buy Toyota or Honda. I know they have some one-offs sometimes but for the most part they run for a long time. At least I've never known anyone who owned one to have a major problem until the car was at 200k miles or something and by then you'd probably want to replace the car anyway because their seats, door handles (constantly break), paint and everything else has probably already deteriorated drastically.
