Well. I'm fairly certain you do need a Mac to create a MacOS binary, unless whatever you're using can cross-compile for MacOS from Windows, but in most cases you'll need a Mac. BUT, you can just use a Mac in the cloud for your builds, you don't need to actually buy a Mac. :p There are a ton of cloud services (including AWS) that let you deploy a Mac-based instance. Still gonna be some $ involved and obviously your time, so you'll have to calculate whether it's worth it. :dunno:

Also, to sign your app you'll need an Apple Developer account which costs $100 / year. If you don't sign your app, users can still run it, but they'll get a prompt saying that it's from an unidentified developer and can't be trusted, and will have to manually go into their System Settings -> Security and click on Allow App or Open Anyways, something like that. They'll only need to do this once the first time they open the app though.

Also, take into account that all Macs are switching away from Intel to Apple Silicon (which is ARM architecture, not x86). That means that if whatever technology you're using for QBC doesn't yet support Apple Silicon (ARM64) and only supports Intel-based x86 Mac builds, then on all new Macs going forward QBC will run in an x86 emulator (called Rosetta 2) that basically emulates x86 on Apple Silicon. The performance would still be very good, and there's no visible difference for the end user, they won't even know, but it's obviously quite a bit slower than running a native Apple Silicon (ARM64) app. That's why all Mac developers are switching to building what's called a Universal app which is a binary that contains both Apple Silicon (ARM) and x86 binaries inside and automatically launches the right version based on what Mac you're using. So unless whatever tech you're using can deploy these Universal binaries (with both ARM and x86), your app is gonna be sort of a little handicapped lol, so it's another thing to consider.

Is this correct? I was under the impression they had blocked building from VM type systems (Hackintosh?). That might be INSANELY outdated knowledge/FUD lol.

lol imagine supporting x86 in 2021. You clearly have never loaded anything I've built in IE, upgrade your life or get out is my motto :emoji_joy:
Oh you poor sweet people who have learned nothing watching Windows flounder about with "Universal Windows Platform" and the VB/WinForms/WPF/Mono/Xamarin clusterfuck that this kind of thing opens up :emoji_joy:

Nah all kidding aside M$ seems fairly dead set on being able to deploy their code to everything. Mono (which is the cross platform for mobile apps being essentially coopted to make it possible to XC desktop apps as well) has it on their storyboard: https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/issues/43313

So that's neat. Honestly ty for the info, it's pretty difficult from my level to look at the Apple ecosystem and know what is/is not actually possible. My impression skimming blogs/etc is they made it nigh impossible to actually publish without a hard device in your hand to generate credentials from (I assume this mimics Window's code signing, which is also a Grinch at $1-300/yr and you STILL get the ugly "UNTRUSTED HEATHEN" warning screen lmao).

Might just grab the apple dev account and play then. I had actually put together my own mobile app but then gave up at the deploy step because of blog how-to's making it seem like a fiasco w/o an actual device but admittedly that was 2 years ago now anyway should've kept up with it more. Just got really interested when M$ finally said they'd stop relying on FOSS developers to make XC possible and were going to finally do it themselves :emoji_laughing:

Lmao I swear programming attracts people who in a different universe w/o computers would have been attaching shark fins to monkeys or some insane mad scientist shit

    https://blog.jetbrains.com/dotnet/2020/12/11/net-development-on-apple-silicon/

Let's take this totally new tech and see if it can run all it's biggest competitors also newest tech! And when it doesn't? We'll force it to anyway :emoji_joy::emoji_joy::emoji_joy:

I've never done it, but from what I've seen and read, I'm about 97% sure there shouldn't be any problem with it. You're basically renting a real Mac Mini machine (per hour, for example) and then connecting to it with Remote Desktop and can do whatever you want. I think it has all the dev tools you need preinstalled on there. You can read more at AWS (EC2 instance called mac1.metal) or https://www.macincloud.com - just the 2 that I've seen mentioned most often.

You can even submit your app to both Mac and iOS App Stores from there, apparently - https://support.macincloud.com/supp...pp-to-the-app-store-with-a-macincloud-server-

"Any of our server plans can be used to create and submit an app to the App Store."

You don't obviously have to submit it to App Store, on Macs you can just have users download the app from your website and install it that way, you're not required to submit to App Store like it's required for iOS apps.
