the little bits of experience you gain really add up over the years doing this; I make comparable money on mTurk as I have at any of my full-time jobs. The give-and-take is I have no job security here, my paycheck is only as much as I'm able to get, no guarantees (regardless of how good I am at budgeting its still going to be stressful!), and the obvious caveat of healthcare being such a disaster in this country that employer-supplied insurance is vastly superior to other options, but I also don't have to deal with managing others/being managed. I afford a pretty decent apartment in a city and a dog, and when those months happen where I make more than anticipated? Well, that's a week off the next month if I want

The big "BUT" here is that it probably took me a handful of years doing this part-time before I even considered it as a real option, and like I said, those years include a lot of little bits of experience that add up... everyone's story is different though!

I went back to this full-time after my car accident six months ago. I'm technically a SEO writer, but I had a metal plate put into my wrist which caused me not to be able to type well for a few months or do anything lol!

That's a really inspiring story. I mostly work from home as-is and I've considered biting the bullet and going full Turk.. but the uncertainty is a big pushback for me in that decision. I'm using it currently as supplemental and only put in about 8 hours a day with it. I can see potential but not guarantees... especially in the slow season.

I'm glad it has been working out for you and wish you the best in the future. Might inspire me to one day cut bait and become a full timer.

 

honestly the best thing about MTurk, to me, is that I can always go back to it. I've used it at least 3 times in my life to facilitate pretty big changes (quitting other jobs, moving to a new state, etc.). I don't relish the prospect of doing ONLY MTurk long-term but the ability to take a year or two to figure stuff out and be relatively secure is nothing to sneeze at.

 

I feel this very much. This is my third stint with turking. I did about five months in 2013, about a year in 2018-2019, and started back up in November. It's nice to know I'll always have something that I can rely on when things get dire or if I just need some cushion.

I recently left my job as a special education teacher of 10 years and am turking full time now. I have a baby and a toddler and the amount I would have to pay for childcare would have been ridiculous plus I love being able to be home with them. I started back up in August and am able to make a good amount of money doing this and anticipate I will be able to make more as time goes on and I get more quals. My boyfriend works full time as well which made the decision to do this full time an easier one especially during slower weeks. I love the flexibility and life is much less stressful now.

 

I agree with this sentiment. I've turked on and off for nearly a decade at this point, and it will never replace my full time job/lifestyle, but it definitely always contributes at least a little during tougher times or when unexpected things pop up. It's a nice little cushion or a nice bonus in a year when I don't need a cushion,

This is my only source of income as well. I make a bit less than I did working full time, but life is cheaper these days too. No gas or parking expenses, fewer trips to Starbucks, that sort of thing. I make more than enough. I get to have luxuries and extras from time to time, but as someone mentioned there are no guarantees and it can be stressful when there's a lull in the work flow. I stay a month ahead though. My current Mturk earnings go into savings and I 'pay' myself from last months earnings, so I always have a bit of a security blanket.

Healthcare though, yeah that's a tough one.

 

Yeah, I don't know what I'd do about healthcare. I work a government job (public university), so I have really great insurance. I'm sure it'd be super expensive if I had to get it out of pocket. I'm the type of person who's super risk adverse, so I'd rather pay more for better insurance "just in case". I could easily see myself going in the red if I had to worry about that.

The stories have a lot in common. I've been doing this off and on for years too, and never considered making it my only income until an accident forced me to take some time off. Mturk really is more of a long game. I think for most people it takes time to get to a point where this can work. It pays to stick around even when it gets discouraging.
