In your experience, are you seeing an increased need of remedial math courses? I briefly worked with a prof who handled my uni's math placement exams.

 

Nah, #3 is entirely a question to make sure they understand the domain of logarithmic functions and what it means when their calculator gives them an error.

I used to do all the placement testing at my university as well. I don't know if the need for remediation is really any higher now in general, though we had a bit of a spike right after the pandemic ended. The national trend is to actually eliminate remedial education. For example, in California, it's not legal for a 4-year university to require courses below the college level. The specific section of College Algebra I teach is actually a bit o fan experiment with that, as these students would all be placed into the remedial math course my university offers, but it has very high failure rates for students of color (opportunity gap). We're seeing if by providing extra support (embedded tutoring, supplemental instruction, co-requisite models) if we can improve the pass rates while eliminating remedial education entirely.
