Paypals conversion rate is terrible, wish prolific could just pay out directly to bank. I wince every time I transfer from prolific-paypal-bank.

 

50 cents extra time on the dryer at the laundromat (thanks to a previous user who put in the 50 cents and probably gave up, because the machine's UI is confusing and makes people think it's eating their money so sometimes they give up and leave). — Bonus for me.

Where are you located?

 

In a 2023 thread, @malysa noted that some US banks accept GBP deposits, and will then convert at a current exchange rate and charge the bank's fees (which might be lower than PayPal's). — But I'm unsure if that would work out. I contacted PayPal CS today and they told me that a transfer from GBP (to my US bank account) must be converted to USD by PayPal; so, unfortunately it would not be possible to transfer unconverted GBP from PayPal to my bank account. – YMMV but that's what I was told.

 

Is it a set percentage? For my last few withdrawals, I thought I saw that paypal was taking about 4% of what I expected from the GBP to usd conversion. When I google it, it looks like that should be higher, maybe even double, with the extra fee they tack on after or whatnot. Does anyone know how it's calculated or what it averages?

Bank's currency conversion fees look to typically be in the 1-3% range (I saw chase charges 3% if you make a charge that requires a conversion), so IF it is only 4%, I don't think that's super crazy, but it does still suck. Other places, like in person currency exchanges can & do definitely charge more if visiting a foreign country or if someone visits the US and exchanges currencies.

Reminds me of that scene in the Office where Michael loses a bunch of money by doing two currency transactions at the airport and getting charged on both ends (which is the worst place to exchange money fyi if ever traveling - fees will be highest there).



Compared to 3 months ago, you are getting 10 or 11 cents more per GBP when withdrawing. So, a 100 gbp withdrawal in mid January would have gotten 122 USD, now it would get 133 USD (before fees).



***Unfortunately, this is do to the current economic situation, and the **USD losing about 9% in value against the GBP and Euro and other world currencies since January**, so it's not as rosy as one may think.



While it would appear you are getting more money, it is worth less and because prices are rising due to tariffs and inflation, it's worth even less than that. Foreign investors and governments are dumping US bonds and stocks and turning to other investments because they do not trust the US currently.

****Additionally and more importantly for those of you that rely on crowdsourcing sites for income, billions of dollars in funding has been cut from Universities and organizations that conduct research on these platforms. I would be much more worried about that impact on the amount of work available on sites like mturk and prolific due to our current government's policies.*****************

 

Yeah it seems to be 4% and they won't just send GBP to your bank forcing you to pay the conversion fees through them.

About the conversion rate, your bank is still going to charge you to convert it. I've looked into which banks will take direct deposits of GBP but from what I remember it wasn't feasible for me. There aren't a lot that allow it. I remember the last time I visited Canada and came back with $, my bank converted it for me before putting it in my account because Chase sux (also the reason I haven't been with them in years). I just say screw it. GBP is actually more valuable than the dollar right now and since we now have the stupid president that's sinking the dollar, I wish I hadn't convinced my favorite requestors to start paying in USD.

I scanned the forum to see what I have been missing. I thought you were asking where the laundramat with occasional free dryer time was.

P.S. I've been sick for a few days which feels like ten years. my sinus infection is now by far the worst I've ever had. on an antibiotic and just got out of the bathroom after I filled it with steam. I'm not better yet and REALLY don't want to be sick all weekend and go see the dr. again next week. prayers to get well faster and soon would be appreciated. I'm having a hard time laying down because then I can't breathe through my nose at all, so sleep is obviously difficult lol.

P.S.S. I might try to turk with whoever is around later if I feel up to it just for some normalcy, or I might play snake if anyone knows of any problem-free websites without viruses and stuff where people can play snake?
