Thanks for the generous half-hour timer, researcher, but I'm such a slow writer that it would've taken me 40 minutes to finish your study.

As I've said before, I don't understand the need for short time limits. Many of these research projects collect submissions for days. Why set a time limit of 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, even 30 minutes ... What would be the harm in allowing even more time than that, if days will pass before the researchers process the data? Do the researchers think the slower participants produce responses of low quality? My slow responses today were of high quality, as the researchers will see if they look at the unfinished submission.

Someone mentioned one reason: Risk of underpaying.

I mean, yeah. I'm not here to do unpaid volunteer work (which is what effectively happens on timeouts). — But I am here to spend like 40 minutes for $3, because I'm a slowpoke, and slowpokes don't get a high hourly. That I understand.

 

Yes I understand, some platforms such as Prolific and Connect have specified minimum 'hourly' rates.

Although as I mentioned, on Connect there's a question asking if participants are willing to do 8-minute surveys for $0.25 each — and I don't see how that would be consistent with their allegedly enforced minimums.
