    Get one of those big ass flashlights, like the 1M candlepower ones. Attach it to the end of a shotgun. Now, shine the light outside when the dogs are barking. If it's a cow, great. If it's a badguy, now they can't see and you've got a shotgun on 'em. Either way, it's a win for you.

    I don't think you can put a cow down with a shotgun very easily, shot for a shotgun round is small unless it's buckshot.
