It also helps that there's an activity center near me that is designed for special needs kids. We're going to start taking him there to see if it helps improve his social skills. He still plays pretty independently from other kids.

Yep, there's a TRU at Philadelphia Mills, which is the closest mall to me. I'll be sure to ask the next time we stop by there.

Oh that's even better to have a special place designed for that nearby!

What a great opportunity. I found my stress decreased a bit after getting a diagnosis (at 22 months). Of course, it just went up and kept going up because sometimes it feels like you're just fighting an uphill battle to make sure you get everything you need, want, or want to need for your child. My son is profoundly autistic. He's 12 now. We homeschool, and we've gotten therapies as needed but we never can find therapists that do more than just focus the wrong things or just run around in circles of things he already knows (without reason for it).

I always recommend the books The Out-of-Sync Child and The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun by Carol Kranowitz. Great books for learning SO much about sensory input and processing, and something that has been so much help not only for my son, but for his twin sister, and really, all of us. Hope that helps.

Also true! The daycare this agency kept pushing for us to start at is relatively close to North Philly and overall not a good neighborhood that we would want him visiting through on a regular basis. There's a reason they always have an opening there.

I'll look them up as well. My wife is more of a reader than me, but now that we have some answers, she'll probably want to read up on it more. Thank you!

I can say that for sure as of a few years ago for sure they still had them available for children with all "various needs" whether it be sensory (ex. lights, noise, texture, etc.), adaptive, specific educational for various needs, etc.. I used to get them pretty often when I'd pop in for my son (he has Cerebral Palsy, very limited vision, sensory issues, unofficially diagnosed autism (due to the diagnosis would not change his current treatment according to his Neuro), along with various other dx). The catalog/booklets are pretty awesome by the way, because they are categorized by the specific need you as a parent or the therapist is trying to meet for their goals or interest.

I just saved those recommendations, thank you :)

I don't really run into parents raising autistic kids as much as I used to, but I can tell a lot of them can see it more as a battle than anything else so these will be good to keep in mind in case I run into people organically.

The books are also great for dealing with kids with ADD or ADHD. It's amazing how many "disorders" have a place on the sensory processing spectrum.

The second book may be better. It more briefly summarizes the info in the first books, and includes specific exercises and play types for each issue.

And seriously. We had to spend over a month in the hospital with our son late last year, and the hardest part was keeping people organized and on track and keeping up with what they said they were going to do. I mean, meds and such, they were on top of. But they kept sending in OT and PT and a psych and none of them wanted to coordinate and I swear they'd say that something was imperative and then the next day have no memory of having said such a thing. It really, really sucked to get back into the constant struggle phase. I have a friend with 4 children, 3 autistic, with two of those also with ADHD. They are in a great school with great special ed (and they are all gifted too, some educationally, some musically), and she's constantly struggling with psychologists and the school for their IEPs and making sure that all the teachers follow up with their plans. Made me DAMN glad we homeschool. LOL

YOU CAN HAVE SO MANY HUGS.

My aunt has an autistic kid and she's too self absorbed to care. Luckily the rest of the family steps in but it really pisses me off. I'm not even someone with a desire for my own kids but I get REALLY pissed off at bad parenting.

It really did help us with him (especially with the sensory issues) For example he would not touch anything due to him being overly sensitive to touch and the catalog helped us to easily find items that would help to "desensitize" him enough to get him able to tolerate holding his bottle. Which in turn led us to move on to to bigger things. It truly was a life saver in helping him get to where he is today. I was amazed when I found out about it through one of his therapist.
