It's been a thing for like 11 years and isn't forced by some big company shoving money down it's throat, at least. eSports become so much more fun when people are actually playing because they love the game and not because they get a fat paycheck. Also never forget that Blizzard poached a ton of former TF2 players like Clockwork, Muma, HarryHook, Shadowburn, Sideshow, etc. who only play because they actually get paid and not for love of the game.
