Ours is a giant tub with a big hole in it and carpeting on the top. The others love it (former ferals too lol) but I think it's probably to do with them (or he hates conforming). We took the top off it for awhile and he would also poop next to it. He will use a second one, directly next to it, so it seems like he doesn't like the smell of the other cats? But, at the same time, they used it too and that didn't stop him from that particular one. Problem was that he kicks litter halfway to hell in that one so the vet told us we could try mixing the litter that smells like him with the bigger box and see if he would use it. Spoiler alert: He did not. Well, he half used it. I'm not sure why peeing in it is cool but pooping in it is just TOTALLY NOT OK. We're gonna get another super deep container for him to put directly next to it that isn't as shallow as the second litter box so I don't have litter all in my entry hallway.

He legit crapped on the floor where the old box was, it is like 3 inches from the other box. And then he got on top of the tub and pooped on the carpeting. DID YOU HAVE TO POOP ON THE CARPET?!
