They do a lot of business making those squishy implications to drive traffic. I mean there's nothing surprising about it, surely every site with a wide userbase experienced a similar traffic pattern.

A 48% increase over normal traffic (from 2 other Saturdays) 15 minutes after finding out you're not dying is kind of surprising. You'd think most people had something more important to do than load up THE WRONG HUB. Like call friends and family? If it returned to normal levels I'd agree with you, but going from a 70% drop to a 48% increase is worth noting.

I don't think so. It's psych 101. Most people are going to be acting 'cool' about it, and most people are going to return to the track they were in prior to the false alarm. Return to Normalcy, as it were.

I doubt most people were aware of the alarm, and just experienced an outage. Most people don't take disaster alarms seriously, always trying to act cool and level-headed. So it was nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

Instead phub knows people will write a big story in their head on how everyone is a degenerate, and go look at the page, and remember phub the next time they're horny.

Good cow manipulation on their part.
