I moved here from New Zealand. We use the word "mate" for everything.

• Approval - "nice one, mate"
• High approval - nodding, drawn out "maaate!"
• Disapproval - head shake, disgusted intonation "awww, mate..."
• Pondering someone's motivation - "...mate?"

At a pinch, the word "mate" might be able to be used by the Prime Minister to declare war. A small one, anyway.

As for all the regional stuff here, I live in Pennsylvania, but near Philadelphia, where it's quick, brusque, and if you don't support the local sports team you'll be ostracized until death and even then you're still in trouble. Then I started traveling on business to Maine, New Hampshire, Georgia, and Arkansas.

I love Top Gun. I make Matt watch it with me like 4x a year minimum, and I watch the sexy volleyball game/locker room scenes more than once.

I also like to point out all the scenes where they try to make Tom Cruise seem taller, all the times they say variations of, "I want his ass," and the three times they play Danger Zone. (I never get tired of it)
