I figured the broken backspace out, there are two supporting posts attached to the sides since its a wider key that are supposed to be flush with the switch in the center but were depressed so they weren't seating in the keycap right. I pulled them into the up position before putting the cap on and now it works everytime!

 

I do this sometimes. But then I always get annoyed with myself the next time I have to use the microwave
