That's awesome! We only had an ECHL team in Chicago for a short time, so I just stuck with my AHL. Following juniors/ECHL would be that much more amazing, I'd think. To see them go from literally being a kid to going pro. I totally agree with you, hockey in general is different from other professional sports, and hockey players are definitely unique. There's a special sense of family that makes a huge difference, between the players as well as the fans. Cammalleri was in the AHL for a few years too, but the Wolves never played the Monarchs so I only saw him play in the All-Star game. The All-Star game during the lockout was intense.

That was honestly my favorite part of the AHL: seeing young players grow, and seeing "career minor leaguers" work their ass off, day in and day out, even knowing they won't graduate to bigger and better things. My favorite case of seeing a young player grow, besides Lehtonen, is easily Braydon Coburn. He was legitimately the worst player on the Wolves, hands down, nobody would argue it. He was a 6'6 pylon, and skated like he was skating through gravel. It was so bad. In Slapshot, there's one line where someone screams "I hate you Braden!" yeah, that became the basic mantra for all of the fans. He worked his ass off, got traded to Philly (for Zhitnik lmao) and he ended up being a star. I still cringe when I see him on the ice (I think he's on TB now?) out of reflex, then I'm like, "Oh yeah, he's good now, sorry."

Hell yeah, Jason Krog was a beast! He and Haydar were unstoppable together. Those two with Sterling were our magical munchkins, because they were all like 5'7-5'10 and they couldn't stop scoring. Sterling wasn't always my favorite (cherry pickers rub me the wrong way), but dude could score. Krog and Haydar had such a little bromance.

Oh! Another good one is Derek Mackenzie, if you want to talk about someone who grinded his way to the top. He was always one of my favorites. Never really a high points guy, but worked his ass off even though he was never really recognized for it. Leader through-and-through, finally promoted to be the captain of the Wolves, then Atlanta let him enter FA. He quickly worked his ass off with the Blue Jackets and now he's the captain of the Panthers. I love seeing him play. Brad Larsen was the same type of quiet leader, but he went the opposite way: NHL to the AHL. It was a treat to get him, though. Atlanta got us all the little forwards and big dumb D-men, and the Wolves did a good job of filling in the blanks with solid experienced, mature players to help the youngins grow.

It's a good and bad thing though, because it means I love a million different players on every team, which makes the NHL conflicting for me. Avs will always be my #1, but there are always individual players I follow which gets difficult, lol. At least I always have a dog in any fight though.

Nope! I've never seen Tool. They've been a bucketlist show for me for so long. I sat here watching the timer tick down until it went on sale at 11:00, and had the tickets at 11:02. I was not going to miss it, haha.

That's awesome, and just reminding me why one of my favorite retirement ideas is to be a season ticket holder for some sort of minor league team. That lockout year must have been some damn good hockey. There were young guys like Spezza who chose the AHL over Europe, and then the epic draft class of 03 would have been an influx of young talent the league will likely never see again.

It's too bad you don't still go, but I definitely understand how it wouldn't quite feel the same anymore.
