When I googled "Google tracks how many people are in a store" an article came up that had this. I think they use that credit card data to prove their ads are working. I'm sure it's all under the same umbrella they use to track us everywhere we go.

But knowing this now, I'll be more patient with people who do write checks to avoid being "tracked." (There are still people who write them here, and I'm more fine with checks than I am with people who pay in cash and have to count out coins, which happened to me just yesterday in Target! I paid with cash, too, but I just handed bills to speed things up!)

 

Writing checks won't stop google from knowing that they shopped at store X if they have a phone. They have multiple ways of confirming that you shopped at a store and that debit card method is just one way.

 

True, but I was meaning tracking what people buy.

I'm sure wherever we go is tracked at this point somehow. Unless I leave my phone at home. Which I rarely do because I'm one of those people who usually has earbuds in so I can avoid talking to other people.

 

Any my original comment to CT fell flat, it was more meant to be a jab at him complaining earlier this week about people who write checks at the grocery store.

Maybe they're smarter than we think (if you mind your purchases being tracked. If you don't, you won't care).

 

Well I think that they are as smart as a bowl of cheerios with water so that is entirely possible but it is a low bar to start with.

 

What RA said. In all likelihood your bank is just selling data en masse to Google/middleman company/etc. I know I've gotten more than one notice about my bank changing their sharing policy and there's no true opt-out other than closing the account and stuffing cash in a mattress.

 

Rejected because I added that the pay was unfair to one of the sentences I wrote about the game. Guess that they can't handle the truth.

 

And if they can't buy the data from visa/mastercard etc they can instead buy the data from the store itself if they really care and writing checks won't stop that. If google desires it would be fairly trivial to match the check purchase to someone's google account by matching bluetooth and wifi location data.

Only was commenting on steps people might take to opt out of having some info tracked. To at least feel they have some measure of control.

I pay for lots of stuff in cash. Good to know all my visits to FF restaurants are sekret as I leave my phone at home when I drive to them
