but use whatever coffee you like really. if you like medium blends get something light. if you like darker coffee, get something in a medium blend. it gets darker after 8-24 hours. get your coffee ground course, if you are in store or they ask, just ask them to grind it for a french press or whatever the coarsest setting is. on the coffee grinders in the grocery store, the coarse setting is usually to the left.

White Monkey is fine and easily available.

A Baratza is the best cheap coffee grinder, stepping up means a commercial grinder or lab equipment, and you're looking at ~1k+. If you'll never make Turkish or espresso, the Maestro is a little cheaper.

A set of test sieves is cheaper and better than any "coffee pro" garbage. Get whatever sizes you need, but just two, an 850µ and a 250µ will cover drip, espresso, and press.

Well, you can save a little bit by going with a Maestro if you don't care about getting a super fine grind.

Edit: I guess the entry level ones are called an encore now :?I

if you constantly pay 30$ for 5 lbs of coffee, the grinder pays for itself relatively quickly

$249 just for a coffee grinder?! For that price it better bring me my coffee in bed. I literally have a $15 mr coffee grinder I bought from target 3 years ago that I use almost daily and it works like a champ lol. You don't want fine ground beans with cold brew anyway. Medium grounds work better.

Yeah. A coffee grinder is one of the biggest "It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little" products. Any blade grinder gives very inconsistent results that turn the best coffee into something mediocre at best, and I don't even know the number of rinky-dink grinders I've burned out or snapped a shaft on.

I always suggest to people to invest in brewing before investing in beans; getting a really nice roast and running it through a hamilton beach blade grinder before plopping it unceremoniously in a dirty mr. coffee is tragic, but you can take a bulk whole bean coffee, like a Costco Kirkland special, prepare it carefully, and get a very good cup.

You're right, if you're only cold brewing, use a 1000-1200µ grind size, and realistically anything over ~850µ will give a good result.
The advantage of that Baratza is getting a fine enough grind for Turkish or espresso, and generally a fairly consistent grind.

Oh I thought you guys were talking about cold brew. Yeah, finely ground is much better for espresso which my grinder doesn't do well. I only bought it for cold brew though. I was wrong about the brand, it's actually a cuisinart now that I'm looking at it. I don't drink much espresso. Not enough caffeine for me lol
