The scenario doesn't matter, at all. You're a research participant in a psychological survey, answering the question honestly and by your own brain's guidance is the only correct way to proceed and judging people on the result is unfathomably poor decision making because the survey participant cannot know the true result until after their decision is made, no matter the scenario, if they ever know the result at all. And that is not how good decision makers make decisions.

The "dicks" in the story, if there are any, are the researchers pitting Internet strangers against one another rather than against fictitious characters.

 

Oh girl I say maximize your own payoff. I see noting wrong with being a dick/witch/bad person..heck I was too nice for many years and it got me no where.
