My grandfather was in Korea (ended up with a purple cross because of a firefight that caused a tent to be on fire and he ran in and pulled people out. His leg was badly burned and he would never ever wear shorts or go in a pool because of all of the scars on his legs). My uncle served in Viet Nam and came home badly wounded mentally and physically....and my Dad "person" served in WWII. He had SO many stories, flew some crazy missions and always assumed he would never come back. Husbands dad served in the Philippines as a baker and chef during Korea - and even managed to grow a little garden while he was there and saw combat as well. I'm sure many people have family that have served in various ways going back many years - and those that have family that are currently serving. It's not controversial to love and protect our country. I think we can all agree on that. And that is important. We all want to feel safe, loved and that, even though our future or day-to-day choices may not always align.... and many times may be SO polarizing we want to just ROAR at the state of the world, we can agree that we've gotten here in a lot of ways together. Hopefully we can recognize this day as someplace we can do that. We haven't reached across the aisle in a long time...maybe we can start today? ---- A wall of text to say - what are your family stories? How are we similar?

 

yeah, as much of a shiny, happy hippie that I am, many people don't realize that I was raised by my Army grandparents that didn't both just retire from the Army but also retired from civil service after that. I may not agree with a lot, but EVERYONE should respect anyone who has served, regardless of what they did or how long they served. It literally is a sacrifice. so yeah, second generation military brat & super proud of it ;)

 

Thank you for telling your story! I think there are a lot of shiny, happy hippies out there (me included) who have military backgrounds that can relate! My grandfather ended up going from military to treasury agent so we wouldn't even know where he was a lot of the time and that sucked. You're not wrong that it's a sacrifice. And I'm hoping more people are able to tell their stories and we can get closer to at least agreeing to agree that we will keep a dialogue going, even if we are on opposite sides of the moon <3

My grandfather was a captain in the Navy and served in WWI and WWII. Unfortunately, he passed away before I was born so I never met him. He wrote letters to my mom and she kept them, so I was able to get to know him some through his letters. My aunt was a nurse in the Air Force and she's literally the coolest person I've ever known. My nephew also served in the National Guard and did two tours in Afghanistan. I'm immensely proud and thankful to all of them for their sacrifices.
