1. With the changes to MTurk's payment systems I'm recommending people take a moment to consider securing their on-site banking information from userscripts. TVJS has already been updated to explicitly prevent it from accessing sensitive pages, but workers should strongly consider permanently blacklisting scripts from running on pages containing banking information.

[Guide] Globally Blacklisting Scripts From Running on MTurk's Bank Account Management Pages will show you how.

    (From the article)

"Over the course of several weeks in September, I completed 221 HITs in a little over eight hours of dedicated turking, and earned a grand total of $7.83. That works out to 97 cents an hour."

I earned about $26 my second week turking. This guy must have not been using any tools at all.

This was supposed to go in the daily but I forgot a title so it didn't post :emoji_joy: copy/pasting to the thread instead whoops.

Before I finally get back to doing the normal weekly run-down I want to throw something new at folks who weren't here yesterday (how dare you!).

In response to the latest "wow MTurk is unethical don't use it" article at the NYTimes yesterday a bunch of us drafted up a blog post to (hopefully) give requesters a more balanced view of the platform & let them know that it's OK to post work on MTurk since we're not being held against our will (..well, some of you are but that's because I can't let you leave meeee) haha.

You can preview it here: https://blog.turkerview.com/p/90be3ee9-decb-4ca2-bdb9-ae7416207afc/

I'd LOVE any further feedback, comments, criticism, etc from folks who weren't around. Yesterday folks were mostly throwing out ideas/etc on the thread & that's totally fine (it was pretty fun lol) just tag me in it so I can see it/respond in the AM. DM is also fine if you don't want to post publicly (title it NY Times or something so I know to check ASAP). I think it's high time we stopped having random journalists "speak for us" since at this point they all seem to say the same thing (weird.. almost like just blindly bashing on Amazon generates page clicks & that's all they care about).

So there it is. It'll likely go live on the site & SM channels today ~10:30AM EST. Sorry for the short notice, I'll probably do the same thing for similar posts that go up & hopefully be able to collect wider feedback but this is pretty time sensitive and it was a bit spur of the moment to begin with :flail:

Ok cool, I just so happen to have a list ready
Still looks good, just a few things. I mentioned a couple of these last night - not trying to be annoying if you saw them and chose not to implement, but am only repeating in case they got lost in the mix
    • Articles like this don't hurt Amazon; they hurt you. They hurt me. They drive requesters off the platform and towards platforms that have the outward appearance of caring (like Prolific) while giving significantly less of a shit than Amazon ever could.
      • I still think this needs to be more prominent. Either bold or increase the font size, or put a shortened version as a section header above it, the quote's long enough that it won't look weird imo. I mean this is the whole reason for the post, right? Not just because someone said something insulting and misleading about our place of work, but because that insulting/untrue thing has real consequences for us and our colleagues, and we don't want people to tldr and miss that
        • Articles like this don't hurt Amazon - they hurt workers
    • poorly paid tasks on MTurk: that's the nature
      • change that colon to a semicolon. It makes more sense and there's another colon in the next sentence
    • helping workers, we would argue
      • ok I'll refrain from adding another of my beloved semicolons; add "and" after the comma
    • the quote from jherara is still larger than the other quotes - if unintentional, fix
    • never coming at all — Often turning
      • lowercase often
    • have worse experiences for their workers (including loss of freedom, transparency, and worse wages).
      • change the second worse to "lower" to avoid redundancy
    • Its fees are reasonable (in comparison to others)
      • I'd lose the parentheses here. You've got a a lot of parentheses already and it kinda grabs your attention in a bad way that makes me think 'oh, they're not really reasonable, just less unreasonable than others' - just saying "Its fees are reasonable in comparison to others" doesn't give me that same vibe
If we focus more on mutual respect and less on attention-grabbing clickbait :emoji_clap::emoji_clap::emoji_clap:

Well done. The click-baity articles get old quick and is part of the reason I don't even read most MTurk related articles. I know how well MTurk has served me over the years, I've grown with it, contributed where I could (I know, I've been slacking with this lately - life priorities at the moment) and I don't need an article explaining otherwise.

Bonus: the number of times I LOL during the day reading forums posts makes it that much more fun.
