08/22 - Whim Wednesday!

So being a slow poke is saving my ass - yay.

 

A couple on Reddit, one or two on MTC, and another that I know of. And these are just the public ones. I'm sure more people were erased in the wave.

 

I did see *one* account restored within the last year from suspension, and in that case Amazon outright told them that it was suspended due to a batch reporting their times. One friggin' batch. I'm not saying slow yourself down or anything because we don't necessarily want to have to do work slower than it should be done, but make yourself human as possible, and take the extra two seconds to leave some feedback because that could 100% save your account.

 

Also, I've gotten more captchas in this past week than I have in the past year or so I've been doing mturk and that's probably 100% why.

 

Requesters are evil

 

I've had a mass reject one time that wasn't over turned after I showed the requester what I was doing because they were a douche but it was a while ago.

I'll go back to baking school thanks

 

They're doing what they think is best so that they can get actually good data and not have to throw out 70% of respondents.

 

I don't know if I would go that far.

 

X: I haven't used mTurk yet myself, but curious if you get reimbursed for bad data like this where you can demonstrate that it is problematic?
Y: Well, if you find this before you pay workers, you can deny them payment and no one in Amazon will ask questions why (you don't even have to give a reason). But of course, you do want to be cautious about this and not dismiss workers easily (and give a reason why you denied payment, and answer their messages, pay quickly etc.). Remember that some of them rely on this as their income, and generally MTurk workers get screwed over repeatedly (sadly).

The sad thing is it's really just on a per requester basis. If a requester mass rejects you that's one thing, but if they decide to take it far enough as to report it to Amazon? That's where you get screwed. They might not even realize the implications of that as they're doing it. They may just think it's what they're "supposed" to do. So, as usual it sucks for us. Best thing you can do is be careful and protect yourself.

yeah I was just saying that my times are higher than average so I go to bat with requesters over shit like this more often than I like, which is why I've gone back to baking school before, I think I'll just stay in there from now on

Can't say it's a bad choice. If they're being then we have to be too.

 

Also bears to remember that requesters are human too, and they also get shafted by people treating mturk like they do other beermoney sites and throwing bad data into whatever project they're doing to get their master's degree or whatever.

 

its not skin off my nose but I literally have 3 monitors split into more monitors so it's not the biggest issue, I can see this being a problem with normal people who just happen to read fast or w/e

 

you're fine

people are going MUCH faster than you certainly are.

just don't scam people, don't give shit data, and don't bash requesters through mturk messages.
