Overview

Kari Hartnett [A2Y35BRSYH9G0F] ("Kari") posts HITs that require Amazon Mechanical Turk Workers ("Workers") to find the accepted payment methods provided by a specified website. Chiefly, Kari asks about the acceptance of Visa, Discover, and Paypal.

Kari's Turkopticon can be found here.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. The site accepts Paypal and includes the credit card logos as part of the Paypal payment method

If the site accepts another payment method, Paypal is NOT the only payment method.
If the sites only accepts Paypal, Paypal is the only payment method. (Ensure you answer 'no' to Visa and Discover.)

Reasoning: If the site only accepts Paypal and Paypal accepts Visa and Discover, that doesn't mean the site accepts Visa and Discover; Paypal does.

Remember: For these HITs, it's an all-or-nothing situation in regards to Paypal. That is, either the site accepts only Paypal (mark 'Yes' on Q5) or it accepts Paypal among other payment methods or it doesn't accept Paypal but accepts other payment methods (mark 'No' on Q5).

2a. What do I mark if the credit card logos only appear if I type in the preamble of 4100 (Visa) or 6011 (Discover)?

Many mark this as Yes (other).

However, this can also be confusing given that earlier in the HIT, Kari states: "During checkout process if you only see an input field to type in credit card numbers with no logos shown attempt to type the [preamble]..." This seems to give the indication that perhaps Yes, but only input field to type credit card number in Shopping Cart/Checkout with no credit card logos or names shown may fit. Taken as a standalone statement, this can indicate to the Worker that logos or names must never be shown. Coupled with the previous information regarding logos not being shown, it can be come slightly more ambiguous.

2b. Logos are not immediately visible, are not in a drop-down menu, are not listed anywhere, but there is a field to enter a credit card number and neither preamble causes any brand or logo to appear

Currently, this is unclear. The website accepts payment by credit card, but does not specify which credit cards are accepted. This appears to invoke Yes (other) for Q2, but does not allow one to answer Q3 and Q4 accurately. This provides a conflict in which one cannot proceed unless they refrain from marking the remaining questions. The only option that satisfies this is an answer of No to Q2, even though it is clear that some sort of credit card is accepted by the website in question.

Proceed with caution. This rule is highly ambiguous.

3. Logos are shown on a page other than the cart and/or checkout

Some people have reported that they will see the methods accepted elsewhere (e.g. some websites post them at the bottom of every page) and will mark Q2 as Yes (Other). It is unknown at this time if this is an accepted practice by Kari.

It is worth noting that there are times in which the above statement is true and the cart and/or checkout will have a drop-down menu or immediately visible logos instead, which presents a conflict if you were to mark them as Yes (other).

As always, use your best judgment and proceed with caution.
